We are excited to announce that we will be rolling out several updates to the Octopart BOM tool over the next few weeks. Our first round, released today, includes a batch size calculator, automatic column mapper for the file import, supply chain information, and overall accessibility improvements.
When getting started with the Octopart BOM tool, you have the option to Create a New BOM, or import an already existing BOM file. While these options haven’t changed, we have made the file import easier, faster, and more user friendly. Once you have chosen your BOM file, our automatic column mapper will do the rest of the work for you. With machine learning, the column mapper will identify where the columns of your file belong on the Octopart BOM tool. If you do need to change where a column has mapped to, you have the option to do so using our “edit BOM" dropdown located in the tools at the top of the BOM. You can see how quickly and efficiently the automatic column mapper and import tool works in the GIF above.
While you can still perform actions such as edit your BOM title, change currency, and export BOM to a .csv file, our accessibility improvements have made it easier to see the effect of your batch size on the price of your BOM. The BOM status tool, which is located on the top right hand side of the BOM, drops down a calculator that can help you understand the overall price and coverage of your BOM. As shown in the GIF below, when you enter your preferred batch size the unit price will change accordingly and the calculator will multiply these two factors to give you your total BOM price. You can experiment with price breaks, unit price, and overall price changes by either updating the batch size or the quantity on individual parts. These calculations across the entire BOM will help you when making purchasing decisions for your project.
Finally, we added the new “Specs” column with supply information including lifecycle status, lead time, and RoHS compliance. This highly requested information will keep you updated on the production status, procurement timeframe, and compliance status of parts so that you may choose accordingly for your design.
