China passenger car production and sales declined (3%) Y/Y in June according to data from China Automotive Association (CAAM) and China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This marked the first monthly contraction in production and sales since Jan, signaling a market slowdown amid a stumbling economic recovery in China. On a quarterly basis, 2Q passenger car production/sales increased 21% and 27% Y/Y respectively due to easier compares from last year’s COVID shutdowns; sequentially production and sales increased by 13% and 12%, below typical seasonality of +20%. New energy vehicle (NEV) sales in June increased 35% Y/Y to 806k, which is the second highest unit sale after Dec 2022; On Y/Y basis, growth in NEV sales slowed to 35% vs +50% in the last 3 and 6 months.
