In previous Q+A’s we’ve talked about the specific requirements for connectors in harsh environments. Underwater, hot deserts, and even the vacuum of space.
While these connectors all need to withstand punishing environments, there are specific and vital requirements for manufacturing and selecting components for space travel. We wanted to dig into the topic of space grade connectors, so we reached out to the connector experts at PEI-Genesis.
PEI-Genesis: Many connectors can be made to be “space capable” via different plating options, low magnetic signature, and inclusion of low outgassing components. Including an outgassing process during the manufacturing is also key to making a standard product space capable. At PEI-Genesis, we are one of the few factory authorized distributors with in-house outgassing capabilities.
Regarding specific features that set space level connectors apart from standard harsh environment connectors, space level connectors are designed for space, not life on Earth. IP68 sealing (for example) isn’t as important because there’s not a lot of rain in space!
The bigger differences are that during the manufacturing process (of the spacecraft or satellite) mating cycles are kept at a minimum via limited inter- mates or connector savers so that the connector is kept as pristine as it possibly can be prior to launch. Remember, once it launches it’s nearly impossible to repair it in space.
PEI-Genesis: First of all we need to understand the definition of space. According to NASA, space is defined as 50 miles above the Earth’s surface. Specific applications would be anything designed to operate in space such as a satellite, spacecraft, space stations, and all the instruments and systems contained within.
When selecting space grade connectors here are a few considerations:
Can they be mated easily in a space constrained area?
Are the connectors easy to mate and de-mate?
Can the connector be actuated with a gloved hand?
Does the connector have a history or track record of previous space usage?
PEI-Genesis: Space level connectors haven’t really changed but their form factor has gotten smaller and lighter.
PEI-Genesis: We have seen an increase in the demand for space level connectors.
At this time we haven’t seen an impact on the connector market as a result of the growth of the private space industry. However, if the current trend continues we could very well see an impact at some point.
PEI-Genesis: Not really. Space level connectors are much too over-engineered for use on Earth. Of course, they would work in a non-aerospace application, but there’s really no need to employ those kinds of products in non-aerospace applications.
